Meet and Sponsor the 2024 Twende Pamoja Team

Twende Pamoja" means "Let's go together."  We walk in solidarity with those whom Maternal Life supports:  Children who walk miles to fetch water and find firewood for their families.  Pregnant mothers who struggle for hours to reach a safe facility to give birth.  Fathers who awake before sunrise to find work to give their family a sustainable wage.

Each walker commits to covering their own travel expenses, which means all of your donations go to support to the work of Maternal Life and our mission to bring safe births and secure families to those living in extreme poverty.

Meet the Descalzo Family

We are Carlos, Rebecca and Andrew Descalzo from Colorado. Carlos is CEO of  Injoy Health Education and Rebecca is CEO of the Descalzo household. Andrew is a student at Christendom College in Virginia.

The health care in the U.S. that we take for granted offers us safety for the most part. While the system is not perfect, it is a blessing that many Americans can access needed equipment and high level expertise. There are still gaps in outcomes and accessibility in the U.S., but the securities many of us take for granted are genuine worries of pregnant moms in rural Africa, whose mortality rates are horrifying to contemplate.  During our strenuous days of walking and camping in the wilderness of Kenya we will ponder the pregnant moms who take long journeys on foot to deliver their babies in rudimentary clinics. We will walk in solidarity with them and their families. Please click the box below and consider making a donation in our honor to Maternal Life that will directly improve the odds for moms and babies in Africa.

Carlos’ mission at Injoy Health Education is closely mirrored to the mission of Maternal Life, as both organizations strive to help families to have healthy safe births. With your support we can help rural African moms to experience the safe births that we take for granted. Thank you for supporting this worthy cause!

Meet the Carmichael Family

Hello, we will be representing the Carmichael family on this amazing journey! We are two of five in our family based in Erie, Colorado. Caitlyn will be graduating from high school this year and starting a different journey as a college student in the fall. As we prepare to celebrate this milestone, it draws attention to how blessed we have been. The transition from childhood to young adult is such an influential moment, and we want to provide a memorable experience for each of our children as they step out into the world. We are very grateful to have the opportunity to walk on a mission to improve the quality of life of those in need, surrounded by the wildlife and natural beauty of Africa. We are excited to see the work being done by Maternal Life International, to meet the people affected by this work, to make new friends, and to learn more about non-profit work in general. As an aspiring medical professional, Caitlyn is especially excited to learn about the medical care provided locally in Africa. We are hopeful that  after this adventure, we can be more grateful, more aware of our world, and learn how to make a difference. What could be more memorable than this?

A short video of the James Family

Meet the James Family

Jeff and Hillary look forward to stepping out from behind our desks to walk among our African brothers and sisters, introduce our supporters to our cause, and share a special experience with our precious Chiri.  Chiri is a young lady with an adventurous spirit, generous heart and is probably tired of hearing so much talk about Mom and Dad's work in Africa around the dinner table.  It's time to step out on an epic journey, to discover ourselves in the quiet, and to remember what daily life looks like for the vast majority in this world.    We hope our walk will bring awareness to the plight of pregnant women, stunted children, families suffering from abuse, infidelity and poverty in Africa.  Thank you for your support!
