St. Joseph Family Life Center: A Dream Coming True!

Our main capital project is completing the construction of the St. Joseph Family Life Center in Masaka, Uganda. The center began as a dream born out of a great need:

“Today in Kitovu Cathedral Parish, we had a seminar for men and we all agreed we need a center desperately – there are so many broken families. We have found that men need more help than women to understand what a family is all about. Mothers get high marks during our programs for their motherly role, but fathers in most cases get a failure!

We prayed and we chose the name St. Joseph because he is the Saint for Fathers and we see that most fathers need empowerment to take up his example in caring for their families like he did.  St. Joseph was a chaste husband, he was hard working, he served his family.  . . We need his example.  We believe such a place will benefit all of Uganda and other countries.  We believe that God in His mercy will provide all of the money.”

The dream is becoming a reality as a center where couples, community leaders, physicians, midwives and nurses from Uganda and neighboring East Africa countries are trained in MLI’s core programs – building a better world through safe births and secure families!

A Beautiful Peace of Land

  • The land on which St. Joseph’s Center is being built was purchased from a couple who had been through The Faithful House training. They offered it to Maternal Life Uganda with such thanksgiving – knowing how much The Faithful House training they had went through had helped their lives.

  • Maternal Life Uganda began with hand clearing of all of the acreage – a monumental task!

  • Architectural plans were made and the first building, a pit latrine was built.

The Main Training Hall (Dr. Peter Sorini Training Center)

*On February 8th, 2016 a great man and neurosurgeon, Dr. Peter Sorini, died in Butte, Montana from a glioblastoma.  Dr. Sorini had been a generous supporter of MLI and at the time of his diagnosis of his brain cancer he was planning on going to Uganda to provide neurosurgical care.  Dr. Sorini’s wife Stephanie and their three lovely daughters Gia, Bella and Mar, wanted to honor Pete with a memorial in Uganda – and with a major gift, funding was in place to build the main training hall, named after Dr. Sorini.

In 2016, the Sorini girls came to Uganda as part of an MLI training team and the groundbreaking ceremony was held, a beautiful event where all experienced a great solidarity with Pete, with each other and with this opportunity to “do something beautiful for God”.

The Dr. Peter Sorini Training Hall was completed in 2019 and local trainings started!

The Dormitory

The dream next became a dormitory, capable of housing 40 people and allowing for on-site training for participants from outside of the Masaka area and from surrounding East African countries.

A major gift came, through a generous donation from a couple in Florida. This along with other fundraising efforts has allowed for the completion of the dormitory. And, with Covid restrictions being lifted plans are being made for four training workshops in the next few months!

We are continuing the work on St. Joseph Family Center: adding a kitchen as the next step as well as improving the water delivery system.  And, the dream also holds construction of a chapel – to honor Christ, to honor the Holy Family and to thank St. Joseph for his patronage.
